Learning English, I decided to repeat the days of the week. Immediately two days I was very much interested. It's Saturday and Sunday. The "day of Saturn" and "the day of the sun" are very clearly read.
I started googling. On queries "the day of Saturn" and "the day of the sun" did not find anything explaining this. Then I started looking for information about the origin of the week. And almost immediately I found what I was looking for. Modern names originate from the names of the days of the week in ancient Rome:
- Sunday - "Dies Solis" (the day of Sun);
- Monday - "Dies Lunae" (the day of Moon);
- Tuesday - "Dies Martis" (the day of Mars);
- Wednesday - "Dies Mercurii" (the day of Mercury);
- Thursday - "Dies Jovis" (the day of Jupiter);
- Friday - "Dies Veneris" (the day of Venus);
- Saturday - "Dies Saturni" (the day of Saturn).
It is clear that for many centuries, not all days have retained Roman names.
If you look further, then seven days of the week arose in the ancient Sumera. Also, the ancient Sumerians gave each of the days a name in honor of one of their gods. But that's a completely different story.
